The game starts off as Peter Parker (a.k.a. Spider-Man) swings into a burning building. Spider-Man takes Mary Jane Watson, his girlfriend, on a thrill ride, and after that, talks about Harry. Mary Jane comforts him; while talking, the symbiote attaches to Peter’s shoe. The Lizard then turns other people into lizards, then escapes into the sewers, Spider Man then follows and defeats the Lizard, turning Connors back to himself. Harry (now the New Goblin) attacks Peter. Spider-Man goes to the city to chase and battle Scorpion to the city and then goes to sleep due to a very tiring day.
During his sleep, the symbiote consumes Peter, leading Peter to have a new jet-black suit. Spider-Man pursues him, and eventually defeats him, washing him away in a sewer line.
Brock and Peter both are given an assignment by their boss, J. Jonah Jameson: catch Spider-Man robbing something, and the one who does gets a promotion. Brock attempts to cheat by paying someone to pose as Spider-Man. The real Spider-Man appears, now influenced by the black suit, breaks Brock’s camera and punches him. Brock tells him that he has many more cameras, and automatically photographs Spider-Man punching him. Spider-Man is able to recover the cameras and Brock swears revenge.
Brock finds a still-alive Sandman, and blackmails him to work together to defeat Spider-Man, or he will kill Sandman’s daughter, Penny. Sandman eventually agrees. They kidnap MJ, so Peter suits up again in the red suit as Spider-Man. Harry arrives and rescues MJ, and fights a giant Sandman which he defeats. Harry attempts to help Spider-Man fight Venom, but is killed in the process.
Activision andTreyarch nailed the darker concept with Spider-Man 3 the game because when I picked up the PS3′s black controller, I lost myself to rage. Ol’ web-head can now web zip with one button; his Spider-Sense turns the screen black and white while displaying enemies in red, allies in green and objectives in yellow; and Spider-Reflexes allow the wall-crawler to slow time and counter attacks with a single button press.
There are 42 missions in Spider-Man 3 that draw from the movie (Sandman, New Goblin, etc.), the comics (Scorpion, Kraven, so on) and the videogame’s original content (three gangs are running amok in New York).
If the same handful of crimes in the last Spider-Man game kept you happy, the expanded roster of events — Activision said there’s three times as many events in Spider-Man 3 — will keep you playing, but please don’t take that as a ringing endorsement. Although New York is prettier than last time, Spider-Man 3 is not up to snuff visually. If you’ve read a Marvel comic book or watched the Spider-Man animated series of the ’90s, you know the Kingpin. It was six 10-minute installments of Spider-Man standing in the middle of the room, the Kingpin attacking, Spidey dodging, and Spidey punching Fisk once in the face. New Goblin? Scorpion?
Don’t fool yourself into thinking the bosses are the only drawback in Spider-Man 3.
